Physics 2305 Laboratory Equipment List
Lab 8: RTP 9 - Newton's Third Law and Conservation of Momentum

Transition notes:

  1. Leave out the mass set, 50 gram mass hanger and ruler for lab 9 (RTP 12).
  2. Leave out the tracks and bumper accessory.   Check for missing parts on the bumper accessory.
  3. The mass set and mass hanger are not used in this lab but are used in the previous and next lab so they should be left out.

Equipment List:

  1. Pasco 750 Lab interface with the following sensors:
    • Motion Detector (yellow DG1, black DG2) (C1.1)
    • Force probe with hook and brass posts mounted on Pasco Dynamics cart. (C1.2) (Analog A)
    • Force probe (C3.2) mounted on Pasco Collision cart (C2.1) (Analog B)
  2. Pasco 2.2 m track (T2) (elevation clamp on 45 cm rod (A1), small Universal clamp (C20.4) to table)
  3. Pasco dynamics cart with force probe (already set out in item 1b)
  4. Pasco collision cart with force probe (already set out in item 1c)
  5. Cart masses (C10.1) (2-500 g and 2-250 g masses)
  6. Brass posts (A13)
  7. Bumper accessory (C5.1)
    • 1-Heavy spring with #1 rubber stopper
    • 2-Clay Cup
    • 2-rubber bumpers on threaded rod
  8. Clay in Ziploc bag (about 10- 15 grams) (C5.2)
  9. Electronic Balance (1000g capacity) (A3.3)

Notes and tests:

  1. Start the test file “2305_Lab08_RTP9_test1.ds”.   Move a hand in front of the Motion Sensor and push and pull on both of the force probes.   They should register on the graph.
  2. No friction pads are used in this lab.
