Physics 2305 Laboratory Equipment List
Lab 12: Heat Engine

Transition notes:

  1. Put away all the Torsion Pendulum parts.
  2. The “A” base, 90 cm rod, mass set, and the RMS will be used in this lab.
  3. The RMS pulley with the string attached is to be stored in the bin for RMS with string.

Equipment list:

  1. Pasco 750 Lab interface with the following sensors:
    • RMS (C3.1) on 90 cm rod in “A” base (C20.1) (yellow DG1, black DG2)
    • Pressure sensor, CI-6534A (Analog A) (C11.1) with 8 pin DIN cable (C11.H)
    • Two temperature sensors (C10.H) on two 90° clamps (A1)
(steam generator to Analog B and Cup to Analog C)
  2. Heat Engine (C11.1). See the setup notes for details on how to assemble this.
    • Small aluminum can
    • Two pieces of Tygon tubing
      • ~30 cm, 2 quick connect couplers, attaches pressure sensor to heat engine (Activity 1).
      • ~50 cm quick connect coupler/ barbed coupler into a one-hole #8 stopper (Activity 5).
    • String attached to platform and going around the large pulley of the rotary motion sensor
  3. 45 cm rod (A1) mounted with a 90° clamp (C10.3) to the 90 cm steel rod in “A” base.
  4. Mass set (1-10, 2-20, 2-50,1-100, 2-200, 1-500 gram) (C10.1)
  5. 5 gram mass hanger (C10.2)
  6. Steam generator (C11.1) with power cable (C9.H)
  7. One large Styrofoam cup (C11.3)
  8. Small metric ruler (C10.2)
  9. Plastic cup for filling steam generator (C11.3)

General Class use items:

  1. 5 gallon container of de-ionized water (one per quadrant) (A3.2)
  2. Cooler with ice (one per quadrant) (A3.1)
  3. Hyman “fire piston” with lubricant, treated paper, cotton, and one 30 cm ruler per piston (C11.3)
    (3 per quadrant)

Notes and Tests:

  1. Test that the RMS reads positve when the engine piston is moved up and that the temperature probes have good readings with the test file “2305_Lab12_Thermal_test.ds”
  2. Both tubing clamps on Heat Engine should be open.
  3. Set up the RMS at the very top of the 90cm rod so the mass hanger can move freely.
