- Variable capacitor.
- 2-conducting spheres on insulating stand.
- Faraday Ice pail.
- Electrostatics Kit: (C23.2)
- Electrometer (Analog A)
- Electrostatic power supply with AC adapter
- Electrostatic Cable
Kit in bag:
- BNC (electrometer)-> Alligator (Ice Pail)
- Red banana plug (power supply)-> spade (loose)
- 8 pin DIN (Pasco interface)-> smaller 8 pin (electrometer)
- Black banana plug (power supply COM-> spade (loose)
- Banana plug (black) (electrometer ground-> power supply COM) (C22.H)
- Clear plastic adhesive tape. (B3.3)
- Small universal clamp (C20.4) with 45 cm rod (A1) and pendulum clamp (C10.3).
- Hard Plastic rod (black) and fur (B8)
- Glass rod and silk (B8)
- Pasco Proof Plane (C23.3)
Notes and tests:
- Connect Electrometer ground to the COM of the Electrostatic Voltage Source. Connect the BNC cable to the Electrometer signal input jack and the alligator clips to the Faraday Ice pail. The red alligator clip should be attached to the inner cylinder and the black alligator clip should be attached to the outer cylinder.
- Plug the black banana-> spade into the top of the banana plug in the COM of the Electrostatic Voltage Source.
- Load the 2306 test file“2306_Lab3_Electrostatics_ test1.ds” and click “start”.
- Set the electrometer to the 100 V scale and turn it on. A green indicator light should display on the front panel. If the green indicator light is blinking the batteries need to be replaced. The batteries are easily knocked out of their holder. If the electrometer doesn’t work check to see that they are installed properly.
- Touch a lead connected to the 30 V output of the voltage source to the in cylinder of the Ice Pail and check to see if the electrometer reads about 30 V. Then touch the ground spade to the same cylinder to dissipate the charge.
- When setting up the variable capacitor make sure the side with the horizontal and vertical adjustments is on the right if you're facing the numbers. Place that side at the 10 mark, and the other plate at the 0 mark.
- Follow procedure for cleaning and testing the proof planes in "Class Notes\2306 Setup files\Lab 3 Electrostatics\ph2306_lab3_activity3_notes.pdf".
