Physics 2306 Laboratory Equipment List
Lab 4: Electric Field Mapping

Transition notes:

  1. The black banana plug cable not belonging to the bagged set from the previous lab can be left out.
  2. All of the other materials from Lab 3 need to be put away.

Equipment List:

  1. Two manual digital multimeters (20 VAC range) (C26.3) propped up.
  2. Variable AC power supply (C24.2)
  3. Tray for field plot (C24.1)
  4. 2-brass rectangular electrodes (C24.2)
  5. 1-brass ring electrode (C24.2)
  6. 2-L shaped metal rods
  7. Patch cables
  8. Plastic cup for filling the tray. (C24.3)
General Class use:
  1. A supply of paper towels (at the TA sinks).
  2. Wet/dry shop vacuum on extension cord (under the TA sinks).

Notes and tests:

  1. Black cables: DMM2->AC->DMM1, A->DMM2
  2. Red cables: DMM2->AC->B
  3. Red probe: DMM1
  4. Level the trays with a bubble level.
  5. Last TA of the day should vacuum out each of the trays and set them where they can dry.
  6. Test by turning on the power supply and the two DMMs.   Adjust the power supply so DMM2 reads 4 V.  Touch electrode A with the voltage probe attached to DMM1, it should read 0 V, then touch the probe to electrode B, it should read 4 V.
  7. The most likely problem with this set up is improper wire connections.   The next is a failed power supply.
