Transition notes:
- The large lab magnet, the cylindrical magnets, the banana plug leads, alligator adapters, and the 45 cm rod on the “A” base stay out from Lab 8 for Lab 9: Magnetism 2. The power ampilfier needs to be switched from analog B to analog C.
Equipment List:
- Pasco 750 Lab interface with the following sensors:
- Pasco Voltage Probe (Analog A) (C25.H)
- Pasco Power Amplifier (Analog C)
- RMS (C3.1) on 45 cm horizontal rod (A1) attached to 90 degree clamp (C10.3), on a 45 cm rod (A1) in an “A” base (C20.1) (yellow DG1, black DG2) for use with the 200 Turn Induction Wand (Pasco EM-8099). See the setup notes for instructions on how to set this up.
- Galvanometer (C29.4)
- Banana plug cables
- Set of 2-cylindrical permanent magnets (C28.2)
- Helmholtz coil base (Pasco EM6715) (C29.1)
- 200 Turn Helmholts Field Coil ( Pasco EM6711) mounted on a Helmholtz base. (C29.3)
- 200 Turn Induction Wand ( Pasco EM-8099) (C29.3)
- 400 Turn Detector Coil ( Pasco EM-6712) (C29.3)
- 2000 Turn Detector Coil ( Pasco EM-6713) (C29.2)
- Variable Gap Magnet ( Pasco EM-8641) (C28.3)
- Small metric ruler (C10.2)
General Lab use:
- Lenz’s law demonstrator (1-2 per quadrant) placed on the TA table and a set up cart. The Lenz's law demonstrator consists of a long tube (B1) and two cylinders (C29.1), one that is magnetic and one that is not. Include a stopwatch (C3.4) with each demonstrator.
Notes and tests:
- Load the test file “2306_Lab9_Magnetism2_ test1.ds”. Drop a magnet through a coil wand attached to the voltage probe, and check that the induced voltage is registered. Move the rotary motion sensor and make sure it registers correctly.
- Hook the voltage probe to an induction wand and the power amp to the large coil as in the picture. Load the test file “2306_Lab9_Magnetism2_ test2.ds” Test that the power amp is putting out a current and when you put the wand in the middle of the coil and move it around you get changes in the induced voltage.
