Lab 12: The Wave Nature of Light

Light Sensor on Linear Translator Assembly set up instructions:

  1. Remove the pulley from the RMS. Store the knurled screw in a parts bin for reassembly when the lab is taken down.
  2. Mount the Linear Translator platform on the far right end of the optics track with a long 1/4"-20 bolt.
  3. Remove the small set screw on one of the end of the Linear Translator bar and slide it away from the body of the Linear Translator.
  4. Slide the RMS onto the bar with the rod clamp pointing away from the base and the "Pasco Rotary Motion Sensor" label upward.
  5. Return the bar to its original postion and reinsert the set screw.
  6. Insert the Aperture assembly with light sensor into the rod clamp and tighten it gently.
  7. Connect the 8 pin DIN cable to the Pasco 750 interface Analog Channel A. Connect the RMS cables to the interface (yellow DG1, black DG2).

Polarization Analyzer Assembly set up instructions:
  1. Remove the rod clamp from the end of the RMS. This is done most quickly with the cordless screw driver and a hex wrench in the chuck. The wrench is stored in the tool box in 103B. Store the clamps and screws in a bin for reassembly when the lab is taken down.
  2. Remove the o-ring from the Polarizartion Analyzer bracket and set aside until after the RMS is mounted on the bracket. Mount the RMS on the Polarizartion Analyzer bracket using the two small thumb screw stored in the bracket. The RMS should be mounted with the pulley on the "Pasco Rotary Motion Sensor" label side facing the polarizing filter with the pulley ring.
  3. Loop the o-ring over the large pulley on the RMS and the pulley ring on the polarizing filter.
