E04: Capacitance

Purpose: To demonstrate capacitance qualitatively and quantitaively.

Description:

Connect the electrometer to the Pasoc 750 interface and load the setup file "E04a.ds". Connect the electrometer to the plates of the capacitor. Connect voltage source to one of the conductive spheres. Touch the proof plane to sphere and then to the variable capacitor to transfer one unit of electric charge. Use the computer to plot the voltage verses charge added to show the concept of capacitance.

Connect the electrometer to the Pasoc 750 interface and load the setup file "E04b.ds". Use the voltage source to charge the capacitor to 30 V. A sheet of dielectric can be inserted in between the plates of the capacitor to demonstrate the effect on capacitance. The plates must be very close together with the dielectric material almost filling the gap for this to work.

Connect the electrometer to the Pasoc 750 interface and load the setup file "E04b.ds". Use the voltage source to charge the capacitor to 30 V. Touch the red lead to the side of the plate with the red wire attached from the electrometer and then remove it. The spacing between the capacitors place can be changed to show the effect on capacitance. The voltage reading will increase as you move the plates apart since increasing the distance causes the capacitance to go down, and the charge remains fixed. Q = CV
