Frequently Asked Questions

|
There is no charge to the student for taking the Self-Learning Module(s). You may need to purchase a textbook if you do not already have one. You may be able to borrow a text from another student, or from the Module Administrator. Back to the topYou do NOT receive college credit for completing the Module(s). Completing the module(s) and passing the corresponding exam(s) allows you to get transfer credit for your course that did not cover that particular topic or topics. Back to the topModules are either Pass or Fail. Even though your homework is not graded, you must complete a number of problems, showing evidence of this to the Module Administrator, before you take the Module exam. The grade on the Module exam does NOT affect the grade you received in your original physics class -- you simply need to pass the Module exam to transfer the credit. Back to the topSuccessfully completing the Self-Learning Modules requires discipline and dedication. A student should not attempt to complete a Module in spare time; specific study time should be set aside. While the student does not lose money if he/she does not pass a Module exam, he/she must either successfully complete a Self-Learning Module to receive transfer credit, or otherwise enroll in PHYS 2305 and/or PHYS 2306 to complete their introductory physics requirements for various majors/colleges. Delay in completing the Module(s) or enrolling in the courses could affect your scheduling of other classes. Back to the topReading, completing the problems, and finishing the practice exam for each Module is expected to take between 30 and 40 hours. Back to the topThere is no specific set of dates to take the Module(s); you take them on your own time. However, until you get your credits transferred by successfully completing the Module(s), you cannot take courses that require Foundations of Physics (PHYS 2305-2306) as a prerequisite. Back to the topYou can study the Module(s) from anywhere; you need not be on campus. You will need to show evidence of your work before you are allowed to take a practice exam, but this can be accomplished by using a fax machine, the regular mail, or an electronic means. The practice exam can be taken anywhere. The actual final examination on a Module is administered in the Physics Department (Robeson Hall) on the Virginia Tech campus. Back to the top |
