2005 Harris Scholarship

Students receive Leonard and Melva Harris Scholarship

The Leonard and Melva Harris Scholarship is awarded to students from Southwest Virginia who are planning to pursue a degree in one of the sciences and who demonstrate high academic achievement.

The following students are recipients of this award:

Katherine Frasca, of Blacksburg, a junior majoring in biology in the College of Science.

Melissa Harnist, of Roanoke, Va., a sophomore double majoring in physics and mathematics in the College of Science.

Lori Lyons, of Floyd, Va., a sophomore majoring in mathematics in the College of Science.

Wade Mattox, of New Castle, Va., a junior majoring in mathematics in the College of Science.

Megan Puckett, of Roanoke, Va., a sophomore majoring in chemistry in the College of Science.

Andrew Vandergrift, of Blacksburg, a junior majoring in biology in the College of Science.

The College of Science at Virginia Tech gives students a comprehensive foundation in the scientific method. Outstanding faculty members teach courses and conduct research in biology, chemistry, economics, geosciences, mathematics, physics, psychology, and statistics. The college is dedicated to fostering a research intensive environment and offers programs in nano-scale and biological sciences, information theory and science, and supports research centersÑin areas such as biomedical and public health sciences, and critical technology and applied scienceÑthat encompass other colleges at the university. The College of Science also houses programs in pre-medicine and scientific law.
