VT Research Personnel: Description of Research & Links: The objective of this experiment is to measure the weak charge of the proton, i.e. its coupling strength to the Z boson, to very high accuracy. The weak charge of the proton is predicted by the Standard Model to be Qpw=1-4sin2θW, where sin2θW is a quantity that has already been measured accurately at LEP and SLD. Any deviation of Qweak's measurement of Qpw from the Standard Model prediction will be a signal of new physics.
