Teaching:

As Chair of the Department, I have significantly reduced my teaching commitments, to one team-taught course each fall semester.  Here are the most recent ones:

Fall 2008: PHYS 2074 - Highlights of Contemporary Physics

This is a course for students from all majors, with an interest in a simple, conceptual introduction to modern ideas in physics. The course discusses paradigm shifts in physics since about 1900 along with some of their philosophical and political consequences: Quantum mechanics, special relativity, chaos and complexity, particle physics and cosmology.  It satisfies a general studies requirements here at Virginia Tech.

Fall 2007: CEE 6514 and GRAD 5984 - Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering

This is a graduate course, required for the fellows of the “EIGER” IGERT , but also open to others. It covers fundamental principles, methodology, results, applications, language, and culture in physics, biology, geosciences, and engineering.  This course helps students overcome disciplinary biases, achieve greater openness to divergent perspectives, and work successfully in interdisciplinary teams.
