Physics 2216 Laboratory Equipment List
Lab 18: Mapping Electric Equipotentials & Field Lines

Equipment List:

  1. Two digital multimeters (auto range) on AC setting (D4.1)
  2. Brass bars (A8.2)
  3. 0-6 V AC power supply (A8.2)
  4. 2 L-shaped rods (A8.2)
  5. Tray for field plot (A8.1)
  6. Patch cables
    • 3-Black banana plug cables that fit into one another
      (2 long, 1 short) (D3.H)
    • 2-Red long banana plug cables that fit into one another (D4.H)
    • 1-Red Voltage test probe (D7.H)
  7. One large styrofoam cup for filling the trays (D8.3)

General Class use:

  1. Paper towel to clean up water spills.
  2. Wet/dry shop vacuum for cleaning up the water at the end of each day. (A7.F)

Notes and Tests :

  1. Last TA of the day should vacuum out each of the trays and set them where they can dry.
  2. Test by turning on the power supply and the two DMMs.   Make sure the multimeter dial is set to volts and the button is pushed to switch to AC from DC. Adjust the power supply so DMM2 reads 4 V.   Touch electrode A with the voltage probe attached to DMM1, it should read 0 V, then touch the probe to electrode B, it should read 4 V.
  3. The most likely problem with this set up is improper wire connections.   The next is a failed power supply.
  4. Level the trays with a bubble level.
  5. Black cables: DMM2->AC->DMM1, A->DMM2
  6. Red cables: DMM2->AC->B
  7. Red probe: DMM1
