An exceptional opportunity exists at the proposed Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) to provide an integrated, unified program in which multidisciplinary research dovetails with education, and outreach (E&O). Target audiences of students, teachers, scientists, officials, legislators, and the general public may be the focus of formal and informal education or outreach programs. E&O activities are expected to be part of DUSEL from pre-ground breaking activities to below ground development and expansion. Anticipated education projects would emphasis K-16 curriculum development, research experiences for undergraduates, career development for teachers, and inreach and exchange activities for undergraduate and graduate students. Outreach projects would include the use and development of digital media, remote access, and a hands-on visitor center or museum. Programmatic E&O goals would be designed to increase diversity in the sciences and education arenas, enhance multidisciplinary science, and expand cultural exposure. Partnership development is already coming to life with the research experimental design, and this will grow and build to include educational partnerships with educational institutions, industries, and local and national organizations. As a premiere facility, DUSEL will have the foresight to install and bring to life a portal for the next generation of scientists and educators.
