Virginia Tech Update for Tracking Group, May 13, 2004

1. Not much progress on mini-torus design in past two weeks due to G0 (Mark) and finals (Juliette). Since we have Solidworks here,
we are going to get the main torus support structure drawings from Stan S. and investigate the interferences with the elastic electrons
for different choices of main torus configuration. Also, after brief discussion with Jim Birchall, it is not obvious that the mean
theta value for the experiment was chosen to optimize the figure-of-merit. We will explore this more in the next two weeks and report
    at the next meeting.

2. 10 of the type N-277 Nanometric Systems amp+discriminator boards have arrived.

3. Norm has done calculations (* link to complete calculations appended below) of

       a) maximum deflection of wire due to gravity; it is only 15 microns at 50 g tension
       b) Frame deflection; it is less than 24 microns (assuming the bulk modulus of Ertalyte); it appears the pre-stressing of the frames is not required.

Based on the these calculations we plan to tension the wires with 50g.

We plan to build a one plane prototype (to test the design) with Ertalyte and monitor its behavior over the next year or so of operation. Things to watch for...

Creep leading to loosening of wires.
       Any deterioration due to out-gassing.

Question:

Any recommendations or warnings about the choice of gasket material?

4. Ertalyte outgassing information from the manufacturer:

       Ertalyte made by Quadrant Tech

ASTME 595 out-gassing test results (standard test):

          baked at 125C in a less than 5 x 10 -5 Torr environment for 24 hours

             0.13% Total mass loss
0.00% CVCM Collected Volatile Condensable Materials at 25C
0.00% water vapor regained in 50% Rel. Humidity for 24hours at 23C.

Not totally sure what this implies, but we can try to obtain similar data for materials that are "approved" (like G10) and see how it compares.
