It looks like air contamination may be able to explain some of the mismatch between the drift chamber data and simulation. Figure 1 shows data from the drift chamber with two different gas flow rates, and requiring only one hit in the chamber. Figure 2 shows GARFIELD simulation results for more (top) and less (bottom) air contamination. Figures 3 and 4 are without requiring one hit for the data and with tracks originating in adjacent cells for the simulation. It seems like the relative changes in the data and the simulation match well for these four cases. A leak in our chamber may be affecting the shape of our distirbution, and some of our long time tail may be from events which would have a shorter drift time in an adjacent cell.
