Ph2305 Makeup and Absence Information, Fall 2008

If you miss a lab you should refer to this page as soon as physically possible after you miss it to arrange for a makeup. Absences are strongly discouraged, because we have very limited resources to offer makeups. In all cases you will have to provide a reason for your absence from your regular session. If the reason for absence is deemed by Prof. Pitt to be acceptable, then the absence will be declared "excused". If the reason for absence is deemed by Prof. Pitt to be unacceptable, then the absence will be declared "unexcused". Those with excused absences can make up the lab with no penalty, those with unexcused absences must make up the lab also, but they will only receive half credit for their work on that lab. (Note: The instructor reserves the right to refuse to allow more than two makeups total (either excused or unexcused) for a given student. Only ONE unexcused absence will be allowed to be made up during the end of term makeup week, except in extraordinary circumstances.)

If you do miss your regular lab session, refer to this page as soon as possible after the absence and follow the instructions appropriate to your case:

  • Lab missed LESS than 24 hours ago:

The two makeup options are to attend either the regular weekly makeup session (for THAT week's lab ONLY) on Friday at 8:00 AM - 9:50 AM (see lab timetable) in the regular lab room (CHEMP103) OR to make the lab up during the end of term makeup week on Dec. 1 - Dec. 4 (see calendar). In either of these cases, you need to fill out the sign-up form at: makeup form. You need to indicate on the form the reason for your absence from your regular session, but if the absence occurred less than 24 hours ago, you do not have to provide any further documentation (but you must give an honest explanation - the honor code applies). Prof. Pitt will typically respond within 24 hours to let you know whether your absence is "excused" or "unexcused". Excused absences can be made up for full credit, while unexcused absences only get half credit.

For absences that occurred longer then 24 hours ago, you will also need to provide some sort of further supporting documentation. Examples of supporting documentation are: a ticket indicating a visit to Schiffert, a note from a university authority indicating attendance at a university event, or written verification from the Dean or your department's academic advisor. If a note from some office will be mailed or emailed, then indicate so in the "Excuse" box. Prof. Pitt will typically respond within 24 hours to let you know whether your absence is "excused" or "unexcused". Excused absences can be made up for full credit, while unexcused absences only get half credit. (Note: if you are going to attend the end of term makeup, you must sign up for it within 1 week of your absence.)

  • You know in advance you will miss an upcoming lab:

The two makeup options are to attend either the regular weekly makeup session (for THAT week's lab ONLY) on Friday at 8:00 AM - 9:50 AM (see lab timetable) in the regular lab room (CHEMP103) OR to make the lab up during the end of term makeup week on Dec. 1 - Dec. 4 (see calendar). In either of these cases, you need to fill out the sign-up form at: makeup form. You need to indicate on the form the reason for your absence from your regular session. If you have any supporting documentation (such as a note from some university authority indicating you are away for a university approved event), you should provide it. Prof. Pitt will typically respond within 24 hours to let you know whether your absence is "excused" or "unexcused". Excused absences can be made up for full credit, while unexcused absences only get half credit.
