Jefferson Lab
Residence Facility Computer Survey
----------------------

The current computers available in the JLAB residence facility rooms are very outdated. The residence facility management plans to ask for money from SURA this year to improve the situation. In order to justify their request, they need information from the users on their residence facility computer habits and needs. If you stay in the residence facility, the JLAB Users Group Board of Directors would like to encourage you to complete the following short survey. The data will be very valuable to the residence facility management in planning and defending their budget request to SURA.

We would like you to fill out the survey even if you bring your own laptop. We want data on how many people do this. Note that the entire residence facility now has wireless access and the hardwired Ethernet jacks with an IP address will remain in the rooms.

To replace the exisiting computers, the most likely solution are "thin clients"; these are like what is currently installed in the common area on the second floor of CEBAF Center. These have no local hard disk, but they allow one access to the onsite Windows network or Linux network. They can be configured in different ways, so part of the purpose of the questions below is to determine what users prefer in the rooms.

Please fill out the survey by the end of the day on Saturday September 6, in order for the data to be used in this year's budget process. Remember to hit "submit" at the bottom after you have completed the survey.

    1. Status:
Grad Student      Postdoc      Professor      Research Staff      Other

    2. Do you typically bring your own laptop computer to use in the residence facility?
     Yes      No

Please fill out the remainder of the survey only if you don't routinely bring a laptop to the residence facility.

    3. Do you depend on the residence facility to provide a computer in your room?
     Yes      No

    4. For what purposes do you currently use the computers in the residence facility rooms (check all that apply):
     Email access
     Microsoft Office applications
     Internet access
     Monitor experiment at lab
Access central systems at the lab
     Printing
Other uses (please enter in the comment box at the end)

    5. Presumably, many users only use the existing residence facility computers for limited purposes since they are out of date. If better computers (like the thin clients) are available, then what purposes would you likely use the computers for (check all that apply):
     Email access
     Microsoft Office applications
     Internet access
     Monitor experiment at lab
Access central systems at the lab
     Printing
Other uses (please enter in the comment box at the end)

    6. If it is possible to provide easy access on the thin clients to both Windows and Unix/Linux type operating systems would you use both?
     Yes      No

    7. If it is only possible to provide easy access to one operating system on the thin clients, which would you prefer?
     Windows      Linux/Unix

    8. Do you ever use the thin client computers that are available in the residence facility Great Room?
     Yes      No

9.If you have any comments that you would like to add, please type them below. Some things that it would be useful to have feedback on are:
    * Do you use the residence facility computers in ways that were not covered in the questions?
    * Are there other software applications you would like to see installed?
    * What is your ideal scenario for computers at the residence facility?

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey! Please submit now.
