The holographic description of a wide class of three-dimensional CFTs requires a new type of holography, the holography of higher spins, and includes the holography of conformally coupled scalars in AdS_4. Quite remarkably, the latter appear in M-theory compactifications for which an exact scalar instanton solutions can be found. The solution describes an instability of AdS_4, that can be also seen in the dual boundary theory. Intriguingly, this solution coincides with a recently obtained exact solution of higher spin theory.
